It is a novel set in a rambling house and gardens belonging to the childless widow of a renowned surgeon, whose large extended family gathers there for the summer. The stories are linked through the characters who flit through the house and encounter each other, and initiate or catalyse incidents that are sometimes very real and often inexplicable. Through them, the scattered family that comes together on and off is revealed and in the process, life across three
generations is showcased.
