The Good Little Ceylonese Girl, the author’s second collection, takes you for a walk on the wild side of the Sri Lankan psyche. But the themes here are deeper and darker. Interspersed are the author’s funny stories, all the more shocking for their juxtaposition with the dark – and this is essentially the author’s own view of Lankan life. “If I could be the director of the movie and say, Cut, let’s do that bit again, I would,” says the good little Ceylonese girl of the title story. “But unlike in cinema, you get one take and one take only. Life’s a black comedy and all performances are live.”
