The action swings from the first Anglo-Afghan war: the British cantonment in Kabul and the Yusufzai hostility in the mountains to the decadent and unstable court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s successors in Lahore especially the period when Maharani Jinda was regent in Lahore. The first half of the book focuses on the north western frontier and the events leading upto the first Anglo Afghan war. The course of this war has been traced through the eyes of the two central characters: the dynamic young British officer, James Durand who is a spy among many other things and the Afghan tribal chief’s daughter Behishta Khan, a very daring young woman.
