In a globalized India, the Ramayana has taken on a new relevance. Namita Gokhale and Malashri Lal engaged in conversation about the inspiration, concept and structure of the book, In Search of Sita:Revisiting Mythology. The editors state, ‘Our project, like the story of Sita, is situated in a cultural and mythic space which is specific to South Asia and also permeates the world view of the Indian diaspora. In the Indian psyche, the enduring appeal and relevance of the Sita myth resides in its embodiment as a journey into examining our collective and individual woundings, betrayals, losses, yearnings and initiations.’ The book hopes to highlight Sita’s role in historical and contemporary interpretations of the Ramayana. Gokhale and Lal also read illustrative passages from stories included in the volume.
