Sara Rai is a fiction writer, literary translator, and editor. She is the author of four collections of short stories and a novel in Hindi. She has translated, among other books, Premchand’s Kazaki and Other Marvellous Tales, and with Arvind Krishna Mehrotra, Vinod Kumar Shukla’s Blue Is Like Blue, which won the Mathrubhumi Book of the Year (2020).
Some of her work has been translated into Urdu, German, French, English, and Italian. Im Labyrinth, a collection of her stories translated into German by Johanna Hahn and published by DraupadiVerlag, Heidelberg, won the Coburg Rückert Prize (2019) and was nominated for the Weltempfänger Literaturpreis, Frankfurt (2020). Sara Rai’s book Raw Umber has been awarded the 2023 Tata Literature Live! Book of the Year Award for Non-Fiction.
