Baryalai Popalzai was born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1952. He graduated from Kabul University with a degree in Law and Politics. After the Russian invasion in 1980, Bar fled the country and eventually settled in San Diego, California. When the Taliban was ousted in 2002, Bar returned to Kabul for the first time in twenty years and has been returning a few times every year since then.
