Deepa Bhasthi is a writer and translator working in Kannada and English. Her essays, criticisms, columns and reportage, mainly on literature, the visual arts and the politics of culture have been published in over forty national and international publications.
Her translation of Jnanapitha awardee Dr Kota Shivarama Karanth’s Ade Ooru, Ade Mara was published as The Same Village, The Same Tree. Fate’s Game and Other Stories is her translation of the short stories of Kodagina Gouramma, one of the earliest feminist writers in Kannada in the 20th century. Her translation of the short stories of the Bandaya Sahitya writer Banu Mushtaq is forthcoming. She was awarded the inaugural PEN Presents grant for a sample of these stories by EnglishPEN. She has contributed essays to art projects and books in the UK, Denmark and India. Deepa was the co-founder of the now defunct Forager Collective and co-editor of The Forager magazine, a quarterly online journal of food as a cultural practice and political issue.
