Have you ever picked up a pebble and wondered why that little spot on it reminds you of your neighbour’s pet poodle? Perhaps you even turned it around and realised that the spot looked more like an alien climbing out of a space ship!
Marko Zupanc, Lučka Kovač Martinčič and Uroš Martinčič present an interactive collection of pebbles and stones for young readers, age 8 and above. By letting them recognise interesting silhouettes and draw them, then compare their ideas with others’, the book is meant to inspire a love of nature in children. It also nurtures their innate creativity away from a screen, and fosters respect for the views of others since there are no wrong associations.
The book also features connect-the-dots tasks, colouring patterns, and challenges to notice differences between photos of pebbles. Readers are encouraged to start their own collections of pebbles and share their ideas, so I’m Nick is a great way to reintroduce the beauty of nature to the younger generation.
